A new study has shown that men who take Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug sold by Pfizer in the UK as Viagra, are as likely to suffer from heart disease as those who are not.
In a study, published online in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, researchers examined the risk of heart disease in patients taking Viagra for up to five years. They found that those who took Viagra had a 20% higher risk of developing heart disease, a risk that was twice as high as those who did not take Viagra.
The researchers then looked at the risk of cardiovascular disease in men taking Viagra for six months and found that those who took Viagra were 12 times more likely to be at risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those not taking Viagra.
Viagra was only one of the three drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction in men taking the study, according to the results published online in the journal, which was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
The researchers concluded that Viagra was a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men taking the study. The findings suggest that men taking the study might have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those who do not take the study.
